UNIPVC HER project supports women with breast cancer through adapted exercise
The HER project, led by the Polytechnic University of Viana do Castelo (UNIPVC), is currently supporting 30 women diagnosed with breast cancer through a program of adapted physical exercise. Active since February 2022, the initiative aims to aid physical recovery, combat fatigue associated with oncological treatments, and improve psychological well-being and quality of life.
Coordinated by Silvia Rodrigues and Margarida Marinho, the sessions take place in small groups at the Spotlight facilities in Viana do Castelo. Each participant undergoes a clinical and physical evaluation to tailor exercises to their specific capabilities, limitations, and evolution. Benefits of the program include improved muscle strength, cardiorespiratory capacity, and mobility, alongside a reduction in anxiety and depression symptoms.
Beyond direct intervention, the project includes a scientific and educational component, allowing researchers to monitor health indicators and providing students with experience in oncological exercise prescription. While the team aims to expand the number of participants, logistical challenges regarding session locations remain an obstacle to increasing enrollment.
