Unit 31 inmates allege gym equipment theft to bribe prison officials
Inmates at Unit 31 of the Florencio Varela prison in Argentina have filed a formal judicial complaint against a group of prisoners known as ‘La Comitiva’. The inmates allege that the group dismantled the prison gym, stealing equipment such as dumbbells, Olympic bars, and a multi-gym machine.
The complainants claim the stolen equipment was handed over to prison officials in exchange for impunity to continue drug trafficking operations within the facility. The group is also accused of extorting other prisoners by demanding a portion of goods sent by families and charging fees for visitation access.
Inmates have requested urgent searches of the prison pavilions and an investigation into the assets of the implicated officials. They have specifically asked for the case to be handled by a prosecution office in Quilmes to avoid potential interference from local authorities.
