UNITA accuses Angolan police of attacking official in Uíge

The main opposition party in Angola, UNITA, has accused the National Police of attacking its members and surrounding its headquarters in Uíge province. The incident occurred during commemorations for the 92nd anniversary of UNITA founder Jonas Malheiro Savimbi and a meeting of the party's youth wing, JURA.

Nelito Ekuikui, the Secretary-General of JURA, reported that he was targeted in an attack but escaped unhurt. UNITA officials stated that police used tear gas and live ammunition, resulting in at least two injuries, including one individual shot in the foot. UNITA President Adalberto Costa Júnior described the event as an "atentado contra a vida" (attack against life).

Ekuikui criticized the ruling MPLA, characterizing it as a "party-state" that utilizes security forces for political competition. He warned that, unlike during the 2022 elections, the party will no longer appeal to the population for serenity in the face of such actions.
