UNITA alleges electoral pressure in Angola
The main opposition party in Angola, UNITA, has filed a memorandum with the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights alleging that public institutions and employers are pressuring workers to present proof of voter registration. This occurs during the ongoing update of the electoral roll ahead of the 2027 general elections.
UNITA expressed concern that administrative requirements are being used as a form of coercion, warning that associating the lack of registration proof with labor sanctions or other unfavorable consequences lacks a clear legal basis. The party has called for the disclosure of any official guidelines issued and requested instructions to prevent administrative discrimination or coercion of workers.
Additionally, UNITA highlighted the insufficiency of registration centers in rural areas. The current registration process, which began on June 15, requires citizens over 18 to provide proof of life to verify their voting location.
