United Airlines 767 clips bakery truck and light pole on New Jersey Turnpike during Newark approach

United Airlines Flight 169, a Boeing 767‑400 arriving from Venice, Italy, was on final approach to Newark Liberty International Airport on May 3, 2026 when its landing gear struck a light pole and the roof of a bakery delivery truck traveling on the New Jersey Turnpike. The truck, operated by H&S Bakery, sustained a broken window and its driver suffered minor cuts; he was treated and released from the hospital. All 221 passengers and 10 crew members aboard the aircraft were unharmed. The plane landed safely, with only minor damage reported. United Airlines removed the flight crew from service and began a safety review. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have opened investigations, directing the airline to provide cockpit‑voice and flight‑data recordings. Chuck Paterakis, senior vice‑president of transportation for H&S Bakery, said, “It’s a miracle that everyone on that plane and the driver were unharmed.”
