United and American Airlines announce major 2027 international route expansions
Major airlines have announced significant international network expansions scheduled for the summer of 2027.
United Airlines is undertaking its largest international expansion in company history, adding 10 new cities. Key routes include service from San Francisco to Okinawa, Japan, and from Newark to several European destinations such as Marseille, Ibiza, Valencia, Ljubljana, Olbia, and Catania. The airline will also introduce service from Washington Dulles to Toulouse, France, and from Los Angeles to Osaka, Japan.
American Airlines is also expanding its European footprint, primarily utilizing the Airbus A321XLR narrowbody aircraft. New routes include connections from Philadelphia to Porto, Reykjavik, and Vienna, as well as from New York JFK to Amsterdam and Nice. Additionally, the airline will serve Charlotte to Barcelona and Chicago to Tokyo-Narita.
Other carriers are also adjusting their long-haul strategies. Alaska Airlines will launch a seasonal direct service between Seattle and Athens, Greece, using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. Meanwhile, Lufthansa subsidiary Discover Airlines will introduce its first routes to the British Isles, connecting Frankfurt to Glasgow, Shannon, Bristol, and Inverness.
