United Airlines bans humanoid and animal robots on flights

United Airlines announced a policy on July 23 that prohibits passengers from bringing humanoid or animal‑like robots into the cabin or as checked baggage. The move follows similar restrictions introduced by Delta Air Lines on June 18 and Southwest Airlines in May, which were prompted by high‑profile incidents where robots such as "Stewie" and "Bebop" boarded flights and caused operational delays.

All three carriers cite safety concerns, especially the risk posed by the large lithium‑ion batteries that power many of these devices. The bans apply to any robot that imitates human or animal appearance, movement or behavior, regardless of size, and exclude small, battery‑compliant toy robots. Airlines say the policies are precautionary and will be reviewed as technology evolves.

The new rules affect all United and Delta flights, with Southwest already enforcing its ban. Passengers can still bring other automated devices that meet existing FAA battery limits and size restrictions.
