United Airlines Flight 93 victims honored for preventing terror attack

The United Airlines Flight 93 Memorial honors the 40 passengers and crew members who died in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, during the September 11 attacks. After hijackers seized control of the Boeing 757, the passengers and crew fought back to prevent the aircraft from being used as a weapon against a target in Washington, D.C.

Flight 93 was the only one of the four hijacked planes on 9/11 that did not reach its intended target. Evidence from black box recordings and 37 real-time phone calls made by 13 individuals indicates that the passengers realized the nature of the attacks in New York and at the Pentagon, leading them to vote to counterattack the hijackers. The plane crashed approximately 18 minutes before reaching its likely destination.
