United Airlines flight diverts after passenger trapped in lavatory
A United Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 flight, UA1900, declared an emergency after a 69-year-old passenger became trapped in a rear lavatory due to a malfunctioning lock mechanism.
The incident occurred approximately two and a half hours after the flight departed from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, while the aircraft was cruising at 35,000 feet over Minnesota. Flight attendants attempted to unlock the door using standard procedures and onboard tools for over 15 minutes, but were unsuccessful.
To ensure the passenger's safety and avoid continuing the transcontinental flight to Newark, the pilot declared an emergency and coordinated with Chicago air traffic control. The aircraft diverted to O'Hare International Airport to allow ground technicians to assist in freeing the passenger.
