United Airlines flight returns to Newark after teen calls Fitbit a bomb

United Airlines flight 236 departed Newark for Palma de Mallorca on Saturday, but turned back after a 16‑year‑old passenger labeled his Bluetooth‑enabled Fitbit "bomb". The device triggered a security alert, prompting the crew to request that all passengers turn off electronic devices. The aircraft returned to Newark, where passengers were deplaned and the plane was searched by port‑authorities. The teenager was not charged, but the FBI opened an investigation into the incident. After the security check, a new crew resumed the flight to Mallorca.

The incident raised temporary terrorism concerns but resulted in no injuries or arrests, and the flight ultimately reached its destination.
