United Airlines passenger disputes seat reassignment and boarding error
Dr. Adedeji Adeniyi, a Seattle-based physician, alleges that United Airlines incorrectly assigned his seat to a standby passenger during a July 17 flight from Seattle to Newark. Despite arriving at the gate before the airline’s 15-minute cutoff, Adeniyi claims his seat was released prematurely.
United Airlines rebooked Adeniyi for the following morning, resulting in a nine-hour delay. While the airline issued a statutory compensation check of $1,083.80 for involuntary denied boarding, the dispute escalated due to the airline’s response to a Department of Transportation complaint. United attributed the incident to “operational disruptions beyond their control,” a claim Adeniyi disputes with evidence suggesting the seat was mishandled by gate staff.
