United Airlines targets Delta and American elite flyers with status-match
United Airlines has launched an aggressive loyalty campaign targeting elite frequent flyers from Delta Air Lines and American Airlines. The program offers a 90-day status match, allowing eligible travelers to hold comparable United status temporarily. To retain this status through January 31, 2028, customers must meet specific spending requirements during the 90-day qualification period, with costs ranging from $1,500 for entry-level tiers to $7,000 for the highest Premier 1K tier.
In addition to loyalty competition, United is expanding its tiered pricing strategy to premium cabins. The airline will introduce a lower-priced 'Base' fare for United First and United Business on domestic and certain short-haul international routes. This unbundled approach will offer three tiers—Base, Standard, and Flexible—providing passengers with varying levels of benefits such as seat selection, baggage allowances, and refundability, while maintaining the same onboard service.
The competitive landscape is also being shaped by onboard technology. Some travelers have expressed interest in switching to United due to its use of Starlink satellite internet, contrasting with Delta's current onboard WiFi offerings.
