United Airlines to overhaul MileagePlus elite status rules for 2027
United Airlines is overhauling its MileagePlus elite status qualification process, effective January 1, 2027. The airline will eliminate Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs) as a method to reach higher status tiers. Instead, members will qualify primarily through Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs), though a minimum requirement of four flights operated by United or United Express will remain in place.
The new PQP requirements for 2027 are as follows:
• Premier Silver: 6,000 PQPs • Premier Gold: 12,000 PQPs • Premier Platinum: 18,000 PQPs • Premier 1K: 32,000 PQPs
The most significant change affects the Premier 1K tier, where the PQP requirement will increase from 28,000 to 32,000, a roughly 14% rise. This shift will impact travelers who previously qualified by combining lower PQP totals with a high number of flights.
To assist cardholders, United will provide a PQP deposit at the start of 2027 for eligible credit cardholders. This deposit will equal 5% of the qualification requirement for their current status level, ranging from 300 PQPs for Silver to 1,600 PQPs for Premier 1K.
