UAE reviews AI data center plans due to Iranian security threats
The United Arab Emirates is reviewing the design of its massive 5-gigawatt artificial intelligence data center project to mitigate security risks. Originally planned as a single 26-square-kilometer campus in Abu Dhabi, the project is likely to be restructured into a distributed network of smaller facilities spread across the country.
This strategic shift is a response to regional tensions and the threat of Iranian missile and drone attacks. Following incidents where Iranian drones damaged AWS data centers in the UAE and Bahrain, and subsequent threats specifically targeting the Stargate UAE project, authorities are prioritizing physical resilience. Proposed security enhancements include the use of air defense systems, electronic jamming technology, blast-resistant concrete, and the construction of underground facilities or bunkers within mountain ranges.
The project is led by G42 in collaboration with major American technology firms, including NVIDIA, OpenAI, Oracle, Cisco, and SoftBank. The first phase, known as Stargate UAE, is a $30 billion, 1-gigawatt computing cluster. While the structural approach is being reassessed, construction of this initial phase is ongoing, with the first 200 megawatts of capacity expected to come online by 2026.
