Lana Nusseibeh nominated by UAE for UN Secretary-General

The United Arab Emirates has officially nominated Lana Nusseibeh, the country’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, to run for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. The nomination was submitted by President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan via formal letters to the UN General Assembly and the Security Council.

Nusseibeh, 48, brings extensive multilateral experience, having served as the UAE’s permanent representative to the UN from 2013 to 2024. During her tenure, she presided over Security Council sessions during the UAE’s membership in 2022 and 2023 and served as President of the UN Women Executive Board. She has also been involved in negotiating resolutions related to humanitarian aid in Gaza and multilateral reform.

Her candidacy enters a deadlocked race to succeed António Guterres, whose term ends on December 31, 2026. Previous informal Security Council straw polls have seen all candidates face vetoes from the five permanent members. Nusseibeh joins other contenders, including Rebeca Grynspan of Costa Rica and Rafael Grossi of Argentina, in a contest to find a consensus leader for the international organization.
