United Arab Emirates suspends trade and financial ties with Iran

The United Arab Emirates has suspended all commercial trade and financial transactions with Iran. Abu Dhabi cited military tensions, specifically accusing Tehran of launching ballistic missiles targeting maritime traffic.

This decision significantly impacts Iran’s economy. In 2024, the UAE accounted for approximately 31 percent of Iran’s imports, valued at roughly $21 billion, and received about 13 percent of its exports. Dubai serves as a critical hub for Iranian trade, often acting as a re-export center for goods from other nations.

The suspension occurs amid heightened regional instability and a naval blockade maintained by the United States in the Strait of Hormuz. While Iran has denied the accusations made by Abu Dhabi, the move aligns with increased economic pressure from the United States. Experts suggest that while the official trade halt will damage the Iranian economy, the effectiveness of the measure may depend on international cooperation to address informal financial networks and shadow companies used to bypass sanctions.
