United Democratic Party rejects alleged threats against Gambia's IEC and Armed Forces

The United Democratic Party (UDP) has issued a statement distancing itself from a social media audio recording that allegedly features a party-linked individual making threats against the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and the Gambia Armed Forces.

The party described the remarks, if verified, as “unacceptable” and “fundamentally inconsistent” with its commitment to peaceful democratic engagement. The UDP emphasized that the IEC holds a constitutional responsibility to administer elections, while the Armed Forces are mandated to protect national sovereignty, and both must operate without intimidation.

With the presidential election scheduled for December 5, 2026, the UDP National Executive has called for restraint and discipline among its supporters. The party urged Gambians to reject violence and hate-filled rhetoric, stating that political disagreements should be resolved through lawful and democratic means to ensure a peaceful electoral environment.
