United Kingdom allows modern slavery victims to change employers

The United Kingdom has introduced new immigration rules allowing victims of modern slavery on Skilled Worker visas to change employers without losing their right to remain in the country. Under the new provisions, which took effect on October 8, 2026, individuals formally recognized through the National Referral Mechanism can seek new employment, including self-employment or voluntary work, for the remainder of their visa duration.

Previously, Skilled Worker visa holders were tied to a specific sponsor; leaving an abusive employer often meant risking both their immigration status and their income. The measure is discretionary rather than automatic, meaning the Home Office determines the specific conditions under which a victim's work requirements may be eased. Professional athletes and sports coaches are excluded from these changes.

Minister for Migration and Citizenship Jo White stated that the changes aim to give victims the freedom to leave abusive workplaces and rebuild their lives. The government also noted that it continues to target rogue sponsors, having revoked licenses for over 6,600 sponsors to combat the exploitation of overseas workers.
