United Kingdom to invest £400 million in Tropical Forest Forever Facility

The United Kingdom has announced its intention to invest £400 million (approximately US$540 million) into the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF). Launched by Brazil during the COP30 summit in Belém, the TFFF is a mechanism designed to provide long-term, predictable financing to countries that successfully protect and manage their tropical forests.

In a shift in climate finance strategy, the UK will provide this capital as a loan rather than a grant, aiming to act as an investor to maximize available resources without increasing the burden on taxpayers. The investment is subject to the finalization of governance structures, operational rules, and the UK government's participation in oversight mechanisms.

The TFFF operates on a performance-based model where countries receive financial rewards for maintaining forest cover, verified via satellite imagery. The fund also emphasizes the role of Indigenous peoples and traditional communities, earmarking at least 20% of national payments for these populations. This UK commitment brings the total investment in the TFFF to approximately US$7.3 billion, moving the fund closer to its US$10 billion target.
