United Kingdom authorities target social media over dangerous driving trends

Authorities in the United Kingdom are targeting social media platforms following a rise in dangerous driving trends, specifically challenges involving driving the wrong way against traffic. These trends have been linked to multiple fatalities, including a recent incident on the A66 where two police officers lost their lives while pursuing a vehicle driving in the wrong direction.

Defense Minister Luke Pollard has criticized online platforms for normalizing dangerous behavior, suggesting that the financial incentive to gain views encourages users to take extreme risks. He noted that social media companies possess the tools to remove such content immediately but have yet to do so effectively.

In response to these safety concerns, the UK government plans to ban social media use for children under 16, with implementation expected before Christmas. Additionally, an investigation has been launched into whether TikTok has met its legal obligations regarding the protection of minors.
