United Kingdom authorizes technical data transfer for SCALP missiles to Ukraine
The United Kingdom has authorized the defense manufacturer MBDA to disclose information regarding British components of the SCALP missile to Ukraine. While officially intended to facilitate local assembly, the move could enable the transfer of blueprints, components, or finished missiles, potentially integrating Ukraine into the British-French manufacturing chain.
This decision marks a shift toward more direct British involvement in Ukraine's long-range strike capabilities. To reduce reliance on United States authorization, the UK Ministry of Defense has commissioned several companies, including MBDA UK, to produce prototypes for long-range missiles under Project Brakestop.
Despite these developments and a $50 billion commitment from 12 NATO allies to develop deep-strike precision capabilities, concerns remain regarding the long-range fire gap. Analysts suggest that many planned European capabilities may not be available until the next decade, leaving a disparity between NATO's arsenal and Russia's heavily invested long-range and hypersonic missile systems.
