Vincent Brown charged in UK for 1994 Rwandan genocide crimes
British authorities have charged Dr. Vincent Brown, a 65-year-old Rwandan national residing in London, with crimes related to the 1994 Rwandan genocide. This marks the first time such charges have been brought in the United Kingdom regarding the mass killings of the Tutsi population.
Brown, who previously used the name Vincent Bajinya, faces one count of conduct ancillary to genocide and six counts of conduct ancillary to murder as a crime against humanity. Prosecutors allege that he directed and incited acts of murder and genocide carried out by others during the 1994 conflict.
The charges follow a seven-year investigation initiated in 2019 at the official request of the Rwandan government. Brown is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. Law enforcement officials stated that the case serves as a signal that the UK is not a safe haven for individuals suspected of international crimes, noting that investigations into other suspects linked to the genocide are ongoing.
