United Kingdom considers bank tax increases in upcoming budget

The British government is preparing to present its budget with potential tax increases targeting the banking sector to fund support for low-income households and small businesses facing high energy costs.

Reports indicate a possible increase in corporation tax for banks, which could raise the rate by up to five percentage points on profits exceeding £100 million. If implemented, this would bring the total tax burden on such profits to approximately 33%, building upon the existing 3% surcharge applied following the 2008 financial crisis.

The banking sector has expressed opposition to the move. Ana Botín, Executive Chair of Banco Santander, previously characterized the proposal as discriminatory against the sector.

The government faces a tightening fiscal margin as it attempts to balance support for households and defense spending commitments with strict fiscal rules. Estimates regarding the available fiscal cushion vary, with some analysts suggesting a margin of approximately £12 billion to £23.6 billion.
