United Kingdom considers costly anti-vaping regulations

The United Kingdom government is considering several anti-vaping proposals that could impose significant costs on retailers and manufacturers. According to government impact assessments, a proposed display ban could result in total costs of £872.5 million, primarily affecting independent retailers and specialist shops through expenses such as new display cabinets, updated price lists, and increased transaction times.

Other potential regulations include plain packaging for vape juice, which is estimated to cost £641.1 million, and extending the smoking ban to e-cigarettes at a cost of £531.8 million. Additionally, a requirement for manufacturers to produce vapes in opaque, achromatic colors could cost £330.9 million.

Parallel to these regulatory discussions, public health data highlights a significant gap in risk perception. An Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) survey of over 13,000 adults found that 54% of respondents believed vaping was as harmful as or more harmful than smoking. Among smokers who had never vaped, this figure rose to 61%, while only 29% correctly identified that vaping is less harmful than traditional smoking.
