United Kingdom crime rates fall despite rising public fear

More than 80% of the British public believes crime has increased in recent years, despite data showing significant declines in specific areas.

For instance, while 80% of the public believes mobile phone thefts have risen since 2010, and many believe burglary and vehicle-related thefts have increased, these specific crimes have actually decreased by 50% or more during that period. Similarly, the murder rate has fallen by 20% since 2010, yet two-thirds of the public believe the number of murders has remained the same or increased.

The discrepancy extends to law enforcement resources; police numbers in England and Wales have risen by 20% since 2018, but only 4% of the public correctly identified this increase, with two-thirds believing numbers have fallen. While political figures like Nigel Farage have criticized the Crime Survey for England and Wales, the Office for Statistics Regulation has supported the study as a robust source of data.
