United Kingdom deploys air defense and aircraft to Saudi Arabia
The United Kingdom has deployed air defense systems and a Royal Air Force Voyager aircraft to Saudi Arabia to provide air-to-air refueling support. Prime Minister Andy Burnham informed the House of Commons that the Voyager aircraft has already completed 14 operational missions. The deployment, requested by Saudi Arabia in late September, aims to secure regional interests and protect civilians.
The military assistance comes amid escalating tensions in the region, specifically following Houthi ballistic missile and drone attacks that began on 8 September. These attacks have targeted Saudi infrastructure, including King Khalid International Airport, which suffered a missile strike on 8 October that killed three people and damaged a Saudia aircraft.
In response to the deployment, Yemeni Armed Forces spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Sare’e reported that Saudi warplanes have conducted numerous airstrikes against civilian sites in various Yemeni governorates, including Sanaa, Taiz, and Marib. Sare’e stated that these attacks have resulted in significant civilian casualties and that the total number of Saudi strikes since the escalation began has reached 2,177.
