United Kingdom establishes £2 billion Energy Wealth Fund

The United Kingdom has launched a new Energy Wealth Fund to invest in renewable and low-carbon energy infrastructure. Housed within the National Wealth Fund, the entity will begin with an initial £2 billion in funding, which will be supplemented over time by tax revenues from North Sea oil and gas production.

The announcement coincided with the government's approval of the Jackdaw gas project in the central North Sea. This project is expected to increase domestic gas production by approximately 6% at its peak. The government stated that managing existing fields like Jackdaw is consistent with its commitment to not issue new exploration licenses while transitioning toward net-zero emissions by 2050.

Treasury modeling suggests that if the UK had systematically invested its historical £200 billion in North Sea receipts into a growth-oriented fund rather than using them for immediate spending, the fund could have been worth approximately £1 trillion today. Unlike Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, which invests primarily overseas, the UK’s new fund is designed to focus on domestic green energy projects.
