United Kingdom expands flexible cooperation deals, deepening defence ties with India

The United Kingdom is promoting Enhanced Cooperation Agreements (ECAs) as non‑binding, modular arrangements that allow rapid regulatory alignment and market access in targeted sectors such as digital trade, green energy, artificial intelligence and financial services. ECAs are intended to bypass the lengthy ratification process of full free‑trade treaties, offering greater flexibility for post‑Brexit diplomacy.

In parallel, India and the United Kingdom concluded their 15th Executive Steering Group meeting in London, adopting a roadmap to deepen defence cooperation. The agreement covers expanded interoperability, joint exercises, missile‑system collaboration and defence‑industry co‑development, and is linked to the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) that will take effect on 15 July 2026. Together, these initiatives illustrate the UK's strategy of using sector‑specific, flexible frameworks to strengthen bilateral ties with India and other partners.
