United Kingdom extends nuclear umbrella to Finland via JEF

The United Kingdom has extended its nuclear umbrella to include Finland and other Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) members, providing a layer of deterrence independent of NATO's Article 5. This commitment was highlighted by Admiral Sir Gwyn Jenkins, the UK First Sea Lord, during a recent visit to Finland.

As part of the expanding JEF cooperation, member nations are set to sign an agreement in Oslo this November to establish new combat forces. These forces are designed to enable immediate military responses to threats against JEF members, such as Russia, without necessarily requiring the activation of NATO protocols.

The JEF includes the Nordic and Baltic countries, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. The UK's nuclear capabilities, supported by its patrolling submarines in the Atlantic, will serve as the backbone of the deterrent for these new JEF combat units. This arrangement functions alongside NATO to enhance regional response speeds and operational capabilities.
