United Kingdom faces climate threats to emergency services and historic landscapes

Climate change is placing increasing pressure on the United Kingdom’s emergency services and historic landscapes. Fire and rescue services in London are facing a growing threat from wildfires driven by hotter, drier summers and drought-like conditions. The Fire Brigades Union has called for the rebuilding of emergency services as a ‘national priority,’ specifically requesting the recruitment of 5,000 additional firefighters and improved equipment to manage the rising frequency of grass fires.

Simultaneously, a report by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England indicates that the UK’s 2,800 registered historic parks and gardens are under threat. Extreme weather patterns, including intense rainfall and prolonged dry spells, are overwhelming historic drainage systems, causing tree loss, and facilitating the spread of pests and diseases. Managers of these sites report a critical need for increased funding and specialized guidance to implement climate-resilient adaptations, such as planting drought-resistant species and upgrading infrastructure to manage floodwater.
