United Kingdom faces fiscal pressure ahead of October Budget

The United Kingdom faces mounting fiscal pressure ahead of the October Budget, with economic experts and business leaders warning of significant budgetary challenges. Arthur Laffer, a former economic adviser, has warned that the country is in a ‘death spiral’ caused by excessive taxation and a lack of economic growth. Laffer suggested that the government’s primary issue is not a revenue shortfall but a failure to generate prosperity, proposing measures such as the phased abolition of national insurance for employees.

Simultaneously, the British Chamber of Commerce (BCC) has called on Chancellor John Healey to scrap the state pension triple lock. The policy, which ensures pensions rise with the highest of inflation, wage growth, or 2.5 per cent, currently costs approximately £146bn annually. The BCC argues that replacing the triple lock with inflation-linked increases could save the Treasury £3.3bn over two years, potentially providing much-needed funds to repair public finances, support local councils, and assist young people not in education, employment, or training.
