United Kingdom faces littering and water infrastructure challenges during heatwaves
The United Kingdom is facing environmental and infrastructural challenges driven by heatwaves. Research commissioned by CO2 YOU reveals that while nearly three-quarters of Brits view litter in public spaces as a problem, nearly half admit to leaving rubbish behind in parks or beaches at least once. The study suggests that overflowing bins, wind, and a lack of recycling facilities are primary drivers, with Gen-Z (ages 18-24) being the demographic most likely to admit to littering.
Simultaneously, water infrastructure issues are impacting communities. Broken pipes and burst mains have caused significant disruptions, including business closures and limited medical services in areas like Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. In response to ecological concerns and monitoring failures, local initiatives such as the ‘Adopt a Brook’ programme are utilizing volunteers trained by the Riverfly Partnership and the Freshwater Biological Association to monitor river health through invertebrate counting.
