The United Kingdom faces a significant risk of gas supply shortages by the 2030s as North Sea production declines. While the nation is expanding clean energy infrastructure, officials warn that gas will remain a critical component of the energy system for decades to support heating and industry.

An official assessment highlights the need for ‘unprecedented’ measures to mitigate potential supply shocks that could affect millions of households and businesses. The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has previously flagged an ‘emerging risk to gas supply security,’ particularly during extended periods of cold weather.

To address these risks, the government is considering direct financial interventions to protect aging infrastructure. Potential measures include providing financial support to pipeline operators and owners of gas storage facilities to ensure the economic viability of essential upgrades. Current challenges include low gas storage levels and a lack of progress on major projects, such as the restoration of Centrica’s Rough site in Yorkshire, due to unfavorable financial conditions.
