United Kingdom faces rising inflation and potential interest rate hikes

The United Kingdom faces a critical period for monetary and fiscal policy as upcoming economic data and government decisions converge. Market consensus suggests that annual CPI inflation is expected to rise to 3.4% in September, up from 3.1% in August. Core inflation is also projected to increase from 2.6% to 2.8%.

These inflationary pressures are driven largely by rising energy costs and sticky services inflation. The increase in household energy bills, influenced by wholesale gas prices, adds further strain to consumer budgets. This economic backdrop arrives just before Chancellor John Healey presents the autumn budget on October 28.

In response to these trends, investors are heavily pricing in a potential interest rate hike by the Bank of England. Markets currently reflect approximately 95% odds of a 25 basis point increase on November 5, with further tightening potentially considered by February. While the economy has shown slight GDP growth, the labor market has faced challenges, including a rise in the unemployment rate to 4.9% in July.
