United Kingdom faces rising wave of racist violence and xenophobia
Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Oxfam, have issued a joint statement calling on the UK government to take immediate action regarding the normalization of racist violence. The coalition, which includes 152 other groups, stated that levels of racist violence and intimidation that were previously considered extreme are now becoming weekly occurrences across the country.
Advocates attribute this rise in xenophobia and discrimination to several factors, including growing inequality, underinvestment in public services, and political and media narratives that have normalized anti-migrant sentiment and Islamophobia. While much of the post-Brexit tension has focused on irregular migration, other minority groups are also facing increased levels of targeted discrimination and racial abuse.
