United Kingdom forms new RAF space squadron for satellite defense
The United Kingdom has announced the formation of No. III Space Effects Squadron within the Royal Air Force (RAF) to protect British space interests and critical satellite infrastructure. While existing RAF units, such as the No. I Space Operations Squadron and No. II Space Warning Squadron, focus on monitoring and warning, this new unit is designed to provide a dedicated response function to counter hostile activity.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Harvey Smyth stated that the squadron will safeguard space-based benefits for the armed forces while being capable of denying those same benefits to adversaries. Rather than using destructive anti-satellite missiles—which the government has formally ruled out testing—the squadron is expected to utilize electronic warfare and advanced technology to “disrupt, degrade and deny hostile actions.”
The unit will draw specialist personnel from across the armed forces to support both offensive and defensive space operations. The Ministry of Defence noted that the squadron will expand as additional capabilities enter service, though specific equipment inventories and full operational readiness details remain classified.
