United Kingdom government launches £2.5 billion youth employment initiative

The UK government has announced a £2.5 billion employment and education package aimed at addressing the issue of approximately one million young people aged 16-24 who are currently not in education, employment, or training (NEET).

The initiative plans to create 62,400 apprenticeship and work experience opportunities across several key sectors. The professional services sector, including law, accounting, and artificial intelligence, is expected to provide 22,400 new apprenticeships annually for those under 25. Additionally, the construction sector aims to offer 40,000 work experience placements as part of a broader goal of 100,000 positions.

Labor and Pensions Minister Pat McFadden noted that the program will also open career paths in engineering, defense, and trades such as bricklaying. The government's strategy focuses on transitioning young people from social welfare reliance toward skilled employment by aligning vocational training with the specific needs of businesses.
