United Kingdom heatwave triggers wildfires and train derailment
The United Kingdom is facing a severe environmental emergency as a major heatwave triggers widespread wildfires and infrastructure failures. Temperatures reached 38.1 °C in West London, marking one of the hottest days of the year.
In Stourbridge, wildfires destroyed at least six homes and forced numerous evacuations. The West Midlands Fire Service described the series of incidents as one of the most significant in its history. The fires resulted in the hospitalization of three firefighters and one child.
Simultaneously, a Southern Rail train derailed near Lewes in East Sussex, with three carriages overturning. Approximately 150 passengers were on board, and two people sustained serious injuries. Experts are investigating whether extreme heat caused the railway tracks to deform, leading to the accident.
This event marks the fifth heatwave in the UK this year, highlighting growing vulnerabilities in European urban infrastructure and the increasing impact of climate change.
