United Kingdom increases funding for Sovereign AI Fund
The UK government is working to expand its domestic artificial intelligence industry to decrease reliance on foreign technology. During the October 28 Budget, Chancellor John Healey announced an additional £60 million for the national Sovereign AI Fund to support domestic AI companies.
Originally launched in April 2026 with a £500 million commitment, the fund is managed by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). It functions similarly to a government-backed venture capital fund, providing companies with financial support, research opportunities, and access to powerful supercomputers such as Isambard-AI.
The initiative is part of a global movement toward sovereign AI, which aims to give nations greater control over the technologies they use. This strategy addresses concerns regarding the risks of depending on foreign suppliers, which could potentially disrupt national infrastructure.
