United Kingdom increases military security amid drone surge

The United Kingdom is addressing rising security concerns at its military installations following a significant increase in drone-related incidents. Data obtained via freedom of information requests revealed 340 security incidents involving drones near Ministry of Defence facilities in the twelve months leading up to August 2026. This marks a notable rise from 250 incidents in 2025 and 126 in 2024.

While the Ministry of Defence has not identified the operators of these drones or confirmed foreign state involvement, former Defense Minister Tompkins Elgould has warned that the activity suggests targeted surveillance of British armed forces. The Ministry noted that improved detection systems and increased reporting may also contribute to the higher figures.

In response to evolving threats, the UK has signed a contract worth approximately £552,238 with US-based company ATI Systems to install a rapid-deployment air raid warning system at the RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus. The system is designed to provide both the military base and the local Akrotiri community with enhanced protection through various siren tones and live or pre-recorded voice instructions. The contract, managed through the British Forces Cyprus headquarters in Episkopi, includes equipment installation, personnel training, and technical support.
