United Kingdom introduces aviation accessibility safeguards

New measures are being implemented to improve air travel for disabled passengers as the Civil Aviation Bill progresses through Parliament. The changes aim to provide greater protection against wheelchair damage and ensure airline and airport staff receive specialized training to assist less mobile travelers.

Data from 2023 indicates that more than 1,000 wheelchairs were damaged in transit, averaging over 80 per month. This represents approximately 0.43% of all wheelchairs transported. The improvements follow recommendations from an investigation led by former Paralympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson.

The rollout is being managed by the Aviation Accessibility Implementation Group (AAIG), a cross-industry advisory group established by the Department for Transport to enhance the travel experience for passengers with reduced mobility.
