United Kingdom joins initiative to restrict UN Security Council veto

The United Kingdom has joined a Franco-Mexican initiative that proposes the voluntary restriction of the veto power within the United Nations Security Council. This commitment applies specifically to situations involving genocide, crimes against humanity, and large-scale war crimes.

While the UK's decision does not eliminate the veto privilege or alter the UN Charter, it represents a political shift in the power structure established in 1945. The United Kingdom is the second permanent member to adopt this commitment, following France.

The veto power remains held by five permanent members: the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, and France. Data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) indicates that four of these five nations were among the world's largest arms exporters between 2021 and 2025, with the United States accounting for 42% of global major arms exports.
