United Kingdom launches ‘Be Ready’ national resilience campaign

The UK government has launched the ‘Be Ready’ campaign, urging households to maintain a three-day supply of essential items to manage potential disruptions. Defense Secretary Wes Streeting and other officials stated the initiative aims to prepare citizens for emergencies such as extreme weather, flooding, and large-scale cyberattacks that could disable critical infrastructure, including electricity, water, and digital payment systems.

Recommended supplies include non-perishable food, bottled water (approximately nine liters per person), first-aid kits, torches, power banks, and battery or wind-up radios. The government also advises keeping physical cash on hand in case of digital banking outages. This campaign is part of a broader effort to enhance national resilience, with officials accelerating home-defense planning timelines from 2035 to 2030.

Following the announcement, retailers reported a significant surge in demand for emergency equipment, including wind-up radios and survival kits. The push comes amid concerns regarding geopolitical instability and the increasing frequency of sophisticated cyber threats targeting supply chains and public services.
