United Kingdom Minister Calls EU Re‑entry Inevitable

Lord Spencer Livermore, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, told the House of Lords that the United Kingdom will eventually re‑join the European Union because it is “absolutely in our national economic interest.” He stressed the comment reflected his personal view, not official government policy, prompting a swift political backlash.

Livermore’s remarks go beyond Labour’s 2024 manifesto, which rules out re‑entering the EU’s single market, customs union or full membership. Other senior Labour figures, including Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, have recently described Brexit as a mistake and voiced support for closer ties with Europe. Prime Minister Keir Starmer continues to endorse a “Brexit reset” focused on trade and security cooperation, while preparing for a UK‑EU summit this summer. Brussels is expected to demand deeper concessions, and analysts warn any accession talks would be cautious and politically fraught.
