United Kingdom octopus exports surge to 15 million euros
The United Kingdom has seen a massive surge in octopus exports, with annual values rising from approximately 200,000 euros to 15 million euros. Spain has emerged as the primary buyer of these frozen products.
Since 2021, total octopus landings by British vessels in UK ports have increased by nearly 1,500%. In the first six months of the current period, landings reached 3,000 tonnes, with figures exceeding 3,800 tonnes as of late summer. The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) recently held a conference involving scientists and industry stakeholders to analyze this phenomenon.
While the influx presents a new and significant commercial opportunity for the fishing fleets in South West England, it is described as a double-edged sword. The abundance of octopus is impacting traditional shellfish catches due to the predator's feeding habits.
