United Kingdom outlines G20 priorities at IMF-World Bank meetings
During the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group in Bangkok, a large United Kingdom delegation signaled its upcoming G20 presidency priorities. The delegation included Chancellor John Healey, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, and Minister for Development Kirsty McNeill.
Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband’s participation marks the first time a British foreign secretary has attended the meetings as the UK governor of the World Bank. A central focus of the UK’s mission is the urgent need for a “new deal on debt” to assist lower-income countries.
UK officials emphasized that the current global economic system traps many nations in cycles of debt, poverty, and underinvestment, which prevents adequate funding for public services and climate change response. The UK aims to use its G20 presidency to advocate for policy solutions that move beyond voluntary private creditor agreements to address the global debt crisis and foster economic growth.
