United Kingdom pledges $438 million for climate security and joins EU ocean science program

The United Kingdom has announced significant financial and scientific commitments to address climate and biodiversity-related security risks. During the UN General Assembly, the UK pledged approximately $438 million to tackle instability caused by environmental factors such as food insecurity, water stress, and ecosystem degradation.

The majority of this funding, roughly $437 million, is designated for the Global Environment Facility’s 2026-2030 cycle to support sustainable agriculture, fishing, and resilience against drought and flooding. An additional $1.3 million will support the UN Climate Security Mechanism. The UK aims to integrate biodiversity and climate risks into national security and strategic defense planning.

In a separate move to enhance weather forecasting, the UK is joining OceanEye, an EU-led ocean science initiative. This program aims to create a digital real-time model of the ocean by 2030 using satellite and sensor data. As part of this cooperation, the UK will increase data sharing from the Met Office with the EU and Canada to better predict extreme weather events.
