United Kingdom proposes ban on unlicensed betting advertising
The United Kingdom government has launched a public consultation to ban advertising from betting platforms and cryptocurrency exchanges that do not hold a license to operate within the country. Led by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the initiative aims to protect citizens from fraud and financial risks while preventing unregulated brands from sponsoring football clubs.
The FCA has noted that several football clubs maintain partnerships with companies that fail to comply with local security standards. Under the proposed rules, unlicensed brands would be prohibited from appearing on jerseys, stadium signage, and other sports-related advertising. This measure is intended to prevent the public from being directed toward insecure websites.
Two implementation options have been presented: an immediate ban on unregulated brands at sporting events by August 2027, or a phased approach allowing for transitions until August 2028.
