United Kingdom rail network faces Christmas engineering disruptions

Major engineering projects totaling approximately £152 million are scheduled across the United Kingdom rail network during the festive period, causing significant disruption to several key routes and stations.

London Paddington will close for five days for junction upgrades, track installation, and a deep clean. This closure affects intercity services serving the West of England and Wales, with Great Western Railway services unable to access the station until January 4. During this time, long-distance services will start or finish at Reading, while some will be diverted to London Euston.

Birmingham New Street, the busiest station outside London, is also scheduled for a five-day closure. In East London, the Elizabeth line and Greater Anglia trains will be unable to travel between Liverpool Street and Forest Gate until January 4 due to track replacement. This will result in no train service between Stratford and Romford, with rail replacement buses being deployed.

Network Rail stated that while these essential upgrades aim to improve reliability and capacity, most other routes across the national network will remain open.
