United Kingdom sanctions Sudanese commanders over war crimes
The United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on 15 Sudanese military commanders, militia leaders, and security officials from both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The measures, which include asset freezes and travel bans, target individuals accused of committing war crimes during the fall of el-Fasher.
According to the UK Foreign Office, the sanctions follow investigations by the Centre for Information Resilience, which documented a campaign of systematic starvation and conflict-related sexual violence against civilians. Specific individuals named include RSF Colonel Hussein Abu Jalak and Al-Nour Ahmed Adam, also known as ‘al-Qubba’, for their roles in the siege and subsequent atrocities.
UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband stated that the war in Sudan has resulted in a humanitarian catastrophe and emphasized that those who perpetrated crimes against humanity must be held accountable. The move aims to bring international attention to the violence, which included torture, mass killings, and attacks on hospitals.
